REVIEWS

  • Iffr.com: In zijn meest gestileerde, visueel boeiendste en genre-overstijgendste werk tot nu toe houdt hij zich niet in als het om geweld gaat: dat is bloederig, hevig en overvloedig.
  • Cinapse.co: Steppenwolf is such a bloodthirsty, cruel film, yet it’s unexpectedly, magically one of the most empathetic journeys of the year.
  • Fantastic Fest Review: Sadistic, bleak, tedious, yet darkly humorous, Steppenwolf is difficult to categorize and might only satisfy a very specific audience.
  • Thehollywoodnews.com: An off-kilter oddball tone and super dark comedy should jar against the cacophony of bullets and bloodshed that rains down. Somehow however, the two are married beautifully by Adilkhan Yerzhanov, creating an incredibly intense viewing experience.
  • List.co.uk: Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s film is startling to look at, right from the first frame with the shot of one luckless fellow, his head bagged and a cigarette wedged between his lips.
  • Pajiba.com: Mordantly funny when need be and savagely psyche-ravaging the rest, this might just be a new masterpiece. And Yerzhanov is most definitely a filmmaker of determined means to seek out.
  • Boundingintocomics.com: It’s war, revenge, Steppenwolf is torturing your enemy until they can’t see straight, mocking their painful cries, and making them bleed until you’re satisfied. This film burns itself into your brain with its mesmerizing portrayal of brutality.
  • Thebloggingbanshee.com: Tteppenwolf is a nihilistic, hyper-violent redemption tale filled with social commentary that manages to have a glimmer of hope within the desolation.
  • Screenanarchy.com: Transitions through various genres, including a road movie, a samurai movie, a mobster movie, a dystopic thriller and a revenge drama. ... Steppenwolf is Yerzhanov's unique take on a "steppe gothic" in an intricate blend of exploitational morality.
  • Thefilmverdict.com: An elevated neo-western noir thriller with undercurrents of social critique and savagely dark humour, this is a grimly compelling and stylish new peak from one of Kazakhstan’s most consistently interesting film-makers.
