Na de dood van zijn vader, wordt de 11-jarige Mick (LEVI MILLER) naar de uitgestrekte ranch van zijn grootvader (BRYAN BROWN) in Pilbara gestuurd. Daar, in de Australische outback, wacht hem ongetwijfeld een keihard, dodelijk saai leven. Maar niets blijkt minder waar. Grandpa mag dan al een stugge keikop zijn, Mick raakt er al snel bevriend met de kleurrijke figuren die er wonen en werken en… een rode pup die hij Blue doopt. Blue is echter meer dan een hond, aldus een wijze Aboriginal. Hij is een Marlunghu, een geest die voor allerlei narigheid zorgt. Dat blijkt niet gelogen ook, maar net door die avonturen worden ze ook onafscheidelijk. Tot de bevallige Betty Marble (HANNA MANGAN LAWRENCE) in Pilbara verschijnt en ook de sociale onrust van de verre buitenwereld zich manifesteert…
